John was born in Thorne near Doncaster the 22 Oct 1893, the one of four children born to Joe Ibbertson (1868-1926) and his wife Mary Ann (1872-1920). Joe, originally from Wakefield, was a “barge master” and later captain of a keel. By 1911 the family had moved to Beverley and were living at 23 Holme Church Lane. John was recorded as the mate on the keel “Thomas”. In 1914, he married Frances May Barker in Beverley. Frances was born in 1896, the daughter of a dockside labourer in Hull. Their only child, John Thomas, was born in Beverley the 11 Sep 1914.

John served in the army probably joining up in 1916, he became a private in the 12th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, the 4th Hull Pals Battalion. He was involved at Oppy Wood on 3 May 1917, in the Battle of Arras. He suffered gunshot wounds to the back and right arm and was evacuated to the 30th Casualty Clearing Station where he died on 5 May 1917 aged 23. He is buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, Aubigny, France. He was awarded the War and Victory Medal and is commemorated on the Hengate Memorial and in Beverley Minster on the East Riding Memorial.

His widow Frances married Arthur Farrow in Hull in 1920.
