Marr Hill was born in Beverley the 26 Jun 1897 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 29 Aug 1897, the son of Henry (Harry) and Harriet Hill (nee Campey) who married in 1887. Marr was brought up at 43 St Andrew Street and later at 37 Holme Church Lane, Beverley. After leaving school he worked as an errand boy at a provision dealer on Butcher Row, Beverley. He was a member of the local Church Lads’ Brigade.
Marr joined up on 30 Aug 1915 and becoming a Private in the East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry which was sent to Egypt in 1916. Patroling in the desert and protecting the Suez Canal. By the end of 1917 many members of the Yeomanry were reassigned to the Machine Gun Corps and redeployed to France in early 1918, taking part in the actions of that year that were to bring about the Armistice in Nov 1918. Marr was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
Marr worked at the Grovehill Shipyard and on 20 Dec 1919 he married Laura Richardson at St Mary’s Church, Beverley. They lived at 34 Wilbert Grove and had eight children. By 1939 Marr was working as a messenger and porter at Beverley Rural District Council, Lairgate. He died aged 75 in 1973. Laura died in 1949. Marr is remembered on the Holme Church Lane Street Shrine.
