TitleResearch file number 843 relating to Sergeant Harry Hardie (1894-1951)
Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Harry was born in Beverley in Jan 1894, the son of Harry Hardie (Snr.), a tannery worker, and his wife Ada (nee Renwick), both born in Beverley

Harry enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment in 1906 when, as a boy of 13, he enlisted in the Territorials. He was awarded a Voluntary Long Service Medal in 1909, and was mentioned in a report in the Beverley Recorder dated 12 Sep 1914 :

BEVERLEY RECRUITS - 'Beverley has done well so far as recruiting is concerned, eligible young men being added daily to the different local units. Captain Broomhead and Sergeant Drummer Harry Hardie, who have in hand the recruiting for the 5th East Yorkshires (Beverley Territorials) have been very busy during the past three weeks.'

No specific details of Harry’s wartime service have been found, but, having survived the war it is known that he went on to marry and raise a family. In the 1911 census, aged 17, he was living with his parents in Beverley, employed as a shipyard labourer, but the 1939 Register shows him living in Hull, married to wife Sarah, and employed by the LNER.

Harry died in Hull, in Sep 1951, at the age of 57
