Thomas Albert was the second son of John William Hunt of Newport and his wife Jane (nee Stephenson) of Flambrough. He was born in Woodmansey in 1894. In 1911 his parents were living in Swinemoor Lane, Beverley, his father was employed at the shipyard. Thomas, aged 16 was employed as a horseman on a farm in Middleton on the Wolds.

Thomas enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment, 5th Battalion in Sep 1914 and embarked to France in Apr 1915. The 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment was initially formed of men from the southern part of Yorkshire; often referred to as ‘Beverley Terriers’. The Battalion took part in all the major battles in France, Ypres, the Somme, Aisne, etc., sustaining many casualties. In the Beverley Guardian 1 Feb 1919 Thomas was reported to have “lost a leg during the war”, although no details have been found. It is known that he was awarded a Silver War Badge and was discharged on 15 Oct 1918. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.

Thomas married Jane Ann Potter in Scarborough in 1915, Jane, also known as Jenniewas born in Sherburn, the daughter of Henry Potter a shepherd and his wife Betsy. They had two children, Betsy born in Beverley, and Geoffrey born in Scarborough. In the 1939 Register Thomas, Jane and Betsy are living in the Norton district of Yorkshire, where Thomas is shown as “canteen attendant (unemployed)”. Jane died in the Scarborough district in 1942, Thomas died in 1950, and was buried in Ganton near Sherburn
