Herbert was one of 4 sons born to William and Martha Hudson, the family lived in Bishop Burton where father William was employed as a woodman. Herbert’s elder brothers Ernest and Richard were both awarded the 1914/15 Star but according to the Old Boys of Bishop Burton school plaque, Herbert who was born in May 1899, enlisted in 1918. His initial service number was 54774 with East Yorkshire Regiment but his medal card for the British and Victory medals only record his service with the 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. The 2nd Manchesters, part of 96th Brigade, 32nd Division were involved in fierce battles along the Hindenburg Line throughout Oct 1918. Nineteen year old Herbert died on 21 Oct 1918. He is remembered with honour at the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, west of Arras.

Martha and William lost two of their sons within a month of each other when Richard died from pneumonia in France in Nov 1918. The brothers’ Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries are within 30 miles of each other. Herbert’s eldest brother Ernest survived the war and he returned to Beverley.

Herbert is remembered on the Hengate Memorial in Beverley, on the Memorial in Beverley Minster and on the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity Friendly Society, (Ploughboys Refuge). Bishop Burton remembers him on the Bishop Burton Memorial Cross by the pond, on a plaque at All Saints Church and on the plaque inside the church that commemorates Old Boys of Bishop Burton Church School who served in the Great War.
