Albert Harry Helm, known as Harry, was born in Beverley on 8 Feb 1888 and was baptized at Holy Trinity Church, Hull on 22 Jun 1903. He was one of seven children born to William and Hannah Jane Helm. Hannah died in 1890 and William married Jane Barker in 1893. Harry was a tanner’s labourer and at the time of the 1911 census was lodging with a family at St Andrew’s Street, Beverley. In March 1913 he migrated to Kitchener, Canada, following his brother John who had gone there in 1906. He was described as a joiner on the passenger list.
On 18 Nov 1915 Harry enlisted in the army but due to health issues was discharged on 3 Feb 1917. However a month late he reenlisted joining the 118th Battalion. He reached the rank of corporal and was a driver. He served in France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was awarded the war and Victory medals. He was demobbed in Mar 1920.
Before leaving for Europe Harry married Elizabeth Eager who was also had migrated to Canada in 1913 and was originally from Preston Lancashire. They had two children; Lilian Alice born 1917 and Kenneth born in 120.
Harry died on 6 Sep 1960 aged 72. He was buried at Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener, Canada. His wife died in 19164.
