Frederick William Gillyon was born 1895 in Beverley. His family lived at 64 Keldgate, Beverley. His father was William Thomas Gillyon a tanner's labourer, and his mother was Margaret Ann Gillyon, nee Hoggard . Both were from Beverley. He had four siblings: Frances a draper's assistant; Arthur, George Henry, and Cyril. Frederick was an apprentice house painter at Burton Bros, 23 Toll Gavel, Beverley. He was unmarried
Frederick enlisted in Beverley in March 1916. He was a private in 1/4th Battalion (Hull Territorials) of the East Yorkshire Regiment, 150th Brigade, 50th Division. Since at the time of his death he was attached to the 150th Brigade Machine Gun Corps it is not clear whether he was fighting with his battalion or as part of the larger Brigade. He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Morval on the Somme which took place between 25 and 28 Sep with High Wood behind the British troops and German lines ahead at Les Sars and Eaucourt L'Abbaye.
Frederick died of his wounds in hospital the 27 Sep 1916 and was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. He was awarded the Victory and War Medals posthumously. He is remembered on the Keldgate Street Shrine, Beverley, on the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate and on the East Yorkshire Regimental Memorial in Beverley Minster
