Ward Green was born on 31 Oct 1893 in Cottam the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Green. He was then baptised on 14 Jan 1894 in Cottam. The family was a large one and moved from village to village. After their marriage his parents lived in South Cave, followed by Foston, Warter, Cottam and Beverley. Whilst living in Beverley his parents ran a carrier business which was eventually taken over by their son William Escritt. Ward does not appear in the 1901 census but the rest his family are shown to be living in Cottam, where his father was a shepherd. In 1911 he was working at Walk Farm, Kiplingcoates as a horseman.

Ward was in the 1st Black Watch as a private which he disembodied from on 10 Feb 1915. According to Ancestry he served in three different regiments throughout the war. He gained the 14 star and the 15 star medals. He was wounded during the war and spent time in Edinburgh being treated according to the Beverley Guardian.

Ward Green married Elizabeth Benson in December 1937. They had five children, the first two were born in Holderness and the last three were born in Spen Valley, West Yorkshire. Ward died on 23 Jun 1948. His probate dated 29 Jul 1948 stated he was of Howley Beck Farm, Batley Yorkshire and he left Elizabeth his widow effects to the value of £1630 9s 4d.
