Fred Franklin was born in Beverley the 2 Oct 1893 and was baptised at St Mary’s Church the 4 Nov 1893. He was one of nine children born to Frederick and Hannah Elizabeth Franklin (nee Castle). Fred was brought up at Providence Row, later 11 Wilbert Terrace. He worked as a gardener after leaving school and later as a farm worker.

Fred served as a driver in the Army Supply Corps whose task was to move stores, food and ammunition up to the front line. His photograph in the Beverley Guardian 3 Jun 1917 notes that he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). The ASC (later the RASC) supplied the drivers for ambulances in the RAMC. Fred served in Salonika in the Balkans. Fred was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

On his return to Beverley Fred continued to work on the land. At the time of his marriage on 3 Feb 1924 at St Nicholas’ Church, Beverley he was a groom. His wife was Florence B Gray was born in Hull in 1905. Their daughter Gwendoline was born in 1924. They lived in Blucher Lane, Beckside. Florence died in 1931. Fred later worked as a tanner’s labourer, in 1939 he is recorded as living on West Terrace, off St Nicholas’ Road.

He died in May 1942 aged 48 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery in Beverley the 30 May 1942.
