Arthur Cyril Dawson was born in Beverley 1893 the eldest son of Frank and Eliza Dawson of Newbegin, Beverley. He had one older sister, Violet and 7 younger siblings, James, John, Alice, Phyllis, Grace, Frank and Charles. Before enlisting he was employed as a platers labourer at the Beverley shipyard.

He enlisted in 1914 and died of wounds received at the battle of Flers- Coucelette 20 Sep 1916. He is commemorated in the Dernacourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France. His brother Corporall James Dawson 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment died one week later 25 Sep 1916, he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme. James died in the Battle of Morval.

Violet Dawson, sister of Arthur and James was the model for the painting by Fred Elwell entitled `The Wedding Dress`, it was painted in 1911 and was ironically to become a tragic portrayal for Violet because by Nov 1916 she had lost two brothers and her husband Albert Press in the war.
