Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Peter was born 10 Oct 1896 in Beverley, the son of Peter and Elizabeth Dale (nee Barmby). Elizabeth, aged 26, died suddenly in Jul 1900 and Peter was sent to live with his Uncle and Aunt, Stephen and Hannah Lazenby at Bilton Junction near Harrogate. He attended Bilton School until the age of 14. His father remained with his brother George and sister Elizabeth in Beverley. He remarried in 1902.

The 1911 census shows Peter working as a gardener still living with his Uncle in Harrogate. He enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in Leeds and landed in France on 5 Oct 1915. In 1917 Peter was involved in the 3rd Battle of Ypres. There was a battle on 1 Aug when the Grenadiers lost 26 men and had 113 wounded and 12 missing and it is probable he was wounded then. He died of his wounds on 8 Aug 1917 and is remembered at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium

Corporal Peter Dale was awarded the 15star, Victory medal and the British Medal. His personal possessions on his death were sent to his Uncle Stephen
