Wilfred Danby was born in Beverley 6 Sep 1897 and was baptised at Beverley Minster on the 15 Oct. He was one of five sons born to William and Clara Danby. The family initially lived on Beckside but later moved to Cherry Tree Terrace
Wilfred joined the West Yorkshire Regiment as Private No: 42133. By the time his photo appeared in the Beverley Guardian of 21 Apr 1917, Wilfred was described as being in the Labour Battalion of the West Yorkshires. He later served in the Labour Corps. He was awarded the War and Victory medals.
In the 1939 Register he is recorded as working as a gardener at the “Public Assistance Institution, Woodlands, Children, Beverley”. This would have been the Beverley Workhouse, later Westwood Hospital. He also lived on site. There is no record of Wilfred having married or having had children. He died in Beverley in 1982, aged 85.
