Frederick William Dry was born in Altrincham, Cheshire 1895. His father was Peter Frederick Dry and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Berry. They had 3 children Mabel Lillian, Ethel Mary and Fred. In 1891 the family were living at 162 Dukes Hall Road, Ecclesfield. Peter Dry was employed as a newspaper reporter. By 1901 Fred was living with his grandparents George Thomas and Elizabeth Botterill at 3 Flemingate, Beverley. His mother had died in 1895. By 1911 the family had moved to Enfield, 60 Trinity Lane, Beverley. Peter Dry was living at 6 Bewdley Road, Kidderminster. Fred was employed as a senior telegraph messenger.
Fred enlisted in the Army in Hull. The regimental diary records for the Brigade show that they were serving at the Western Front on the north bank of the Ypres/Commines Canal, a position known as The Bluffs. On 15 Feb the Brigade moved forward from reserve and took part in counter attacks on the Bluff but was unsuccessful. The 7th Brigade was in the line on 16 Feb consolidating their positions, Fred was killed that day. Sergeant Frederick William Dry has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate, Ypres Panel 21 and 31. He was awarded the Victory and British Medals and 15 Star. His death was reported in the Beverley Guardian 11 Mar 1916.
He is remembered on the Beverley Minster East Yorkshire Regiment Memorial and the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate.
