George Henry (known as "Harry") Welburn was killed in action in Belgium aged 19 on 15 Jul 1916. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at Ypres, Belgium. He enlisted in 1915 at Beverley in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, the Green Howards and served as a Private. At the time of his death he was attached to the 10th Battalion and was serving on a quieter section of the front line some distance north from the Battle of the Somme in France. A report of his death in the Beverley Guardian of 23 Sep 1916 was unspecific about the circumstances of his death, it is known that he had arrived in France in May 1916. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Harry was born the 7 Dec 1896 in Beverley, the son of Smith Welburn, a licensed victualler, and Mary Jane. In 1911 the family lived on 5 Sparkmill Terrace, Flemingate ans smith was working as a tanners labourer. Harry briefly served in the Beverley Church Lads' Brigade. On leaving school he had worked as a doctor's errand boy, then at the ropery works on Beckside in 1911 and eventually at Hodgson's Tannery as a labourer where he was later remembered on their Roll of Honour. He was unmarried.

Harry is remembered on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster and on the Hengate War Memorial, Beverley where he is recorded as "G H Welbourn".
