Maurice Thornton was born in Beverley the 8 Apr 1889 the son of William Thornton and Ada, they lived at 53 Keldgate, Beverley. William was originally from Halifax and worked as a tanner’s labourer later becoming an assurance agent. By 1911 Maurice was a barman and in 1913 as a wine merchant’s assistant. He married Ethel Louisa Utteridge at St Mary's Church, Beverley on 10 Aug 1913, they lived at 27 Sloe Lane, Beverley and had three children.
Maurice joined the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (The Beverley Terriers) as a private and then transferred to the 1st/4th Battalion. Towards the end of the war in 1918 he was transferred to the West Riding Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He spent the war in France. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
Maurice returned to Beverley and became a tanner, in 1939 he was living at 15 Bartlett Avenue, Beverley. He died on 11 Nov 1950, aged of 61. Ethel died the following year in Huddersfield.
