Walter Tattersall was born in Beverley in 3 Jan 1895 and baptised 11 Mar 1895 at Beverley Minster, the son of Frederick and Annie Marie Tattersall (nee Venables). In 1911 he was a labourer at the shipyard and living at home with his mother and 5 siblings. Before the war he was employed by Mr T B Hodgson, a coal merchant.

Walter joined the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (the Green Howards). On 14 Sep 1916 the Regiment started to attack the Wonderwerk including part of the Hohenzollern trench in preparation for the Battle of Thiepval. On 15 Sep Walter was killed in action. His body was never with recovered. On the same day his brother Alfred was wounded serving with the same force. Walter is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial and the Hengate memorial in Beverley

He was awarded the Victory and British medal.
