Wilfred Raddings Tomlinson was born in Beverley the 9 Sep 1898 and baptised at St Nicholas’ Church the 2 Oct 1898, the son of George Henry Tomlinson and Elizabeth (nee Porter). George was from Knottingley, West Yorkshire and was the captain of a keel involved in trade between Yorkshire and Beverley Beck via the River Humber. They lived on Blucher Lane, Beckside.

Wilfred served in the Royal Navy, as seaman, though one source describes him as being a trimmer. He enlisted in Grimsby on 16 Mar 1917 and served in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) after the war, until 1923. Wilfred spent time at HMS Attentive III which was the name of the base for auxiliary patrol vessels operating out of Dover. He was there in the spring of 1917 and then from 1 Jul 1917 to Aug 1919. He spent a short time in early summer 1917 at HMS Wallington, the auxiliary base for the Humber at Immingham. From Aug 1919 to late 1920 he was at HMS Eaglet at Liverpool serving the Mersey estuary, undertaking patrolling and minesweeping duties. He was still awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Wilfred married Jessie Porter in 1922, they had six children, the first, Kenneth, born on 11 Jan1923. Wilfred worked as a labourer but is recorded in 1939 working as an oil mill pressman, living at 4 Corporation Road, Beverley. Wilfred died aged 80 in 1979 in Hull. Jessie died in 1968.
