George Bowman was born in Leven the 12 Feb 1880 and baptised at the parish church the 4 Mar 1880, the son of John Bowman and Alice (nee Bruck). The family lived on Waltham Terrace. George became a farm labourer, a horseman, and in 1901 was working on a farm at Low Gardham. He moved to Beverley to become a labourer and then a roadman. George later became a tanner’s labourer, a job he kept for the rest of his working life. On 14 Apr 1906 he married Harriet Knowles at St Nicholas' church, they had eight children and the family lived at 74 Norwood Grove and later at various addresses on Norwood.
George enlisted on 11 Nov 1915 in Beverley and was mobilised on 2 Jun 1916, he joined the 14th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, but was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment shortly after arriving in France in late Oct 1916. He stayed in France for the rest of the war, leaving the Army in Jul 1919. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
George returned to Beverley living at 46 Norwood with his large family. He died in Beverley the 15 Sep 1955 aged 75. Harriet died in Hull in 1961.
