Arthur Edward Buck was born in 1892 in Beverley one of five sons born to William and Mary Buck, and one of three who served, along with Harold and Stanley. Arthur was christened at Beverley Minster. William and Mary Buck were both born in Norfolk, and moved to Beverley in about 1885, William was employed as a tanners' labourer. Arthur was a printer employed by the Beverley Guardian newspaper.
Arthur and Stanley enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment together and their Regimental numbers were consecutive. Sometime later their younger brother, Harold, also enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment. Both Stanley and Harold survived and returned home. Arthur was reported wounded in the Beverley Guardian 26 Jun 1915, but no details were given. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal in the 5th Battalion and took part in the Battles at Ypres. Arthur was killed on 15 Sep 1916, aged 24 years and is one of the many who died on the Somme who have no known grave and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
