Walter was born in Beverley in Jul 1892. He was the third son of George and Ada Brigham in a family of ten surviving children, nine of whom were boys. Walter`s father George worked in the local shipyard as a labourer, Walter and his brother Thomas also worked at the shipyard as plater's helpers in 1911. The family lived in Keldgate and by 1911 were living at 15 Spark Mill Terrace, Flemingate in a 4 roomed house. His mother Ada died in 1918 and father George in 1945.
Walter was a private in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) and served on the Western Front. He was badly wounded in action near Ypres, Belgium in May 1915 and was taken to Boulogne Hospital in France. The hospital Sister wrote to his parents to tell them that Walter had a severe abdomen wound and was in a critical condition but she was hopeful of a recovery. A Chaplain then wrote to tell them that Walter died on 9 May 1915. He was buried in Wimereux Cemetery, Boulogne and his death was reported in the Beverley Guardian on 18 May. He is remembered on the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate. Walter`s brothers George and Fred also served in the Army and survived the War.
