His photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian dated 23 Oct 1915, showing him as a Corporal, he was later promoted to Acting Sergeant, and in 1918 he was transferred to the Manchester Regiment. George adopted his father's middle name, becoming George Hind Bird and in 1921 he married Elizabeth Quin in Bradford. George and Elizabeth had four children. In the census for 1911, aged 19, his occupation is given as Political Agents' Clerk, and he took up similar positions on his return to civilian life: two addresses appear on his Medal Index Card; Balfour House, London, EC2 and Conservative Association, Bradford. Several newspaper articles report on his career moves including one in 1928 from Dewsbury to Ilkeston where he became the 'New Tory Agent', and from Ilkeston to Wales in 1930, where he was appointed 'Chief Agent' for the Merthyr Aberdare district
