Joe Beilby, son of Matthew, was the third of seven children born in Beverley to Matthew and Mary Sarah Beilby. Joe was baptised at St. Mary's Church on 13 Jun 1865. He married Mary Ann Clark, born in Beverley, in 1887 in Leeds; they had a son, James. Mary Ann died in Beverley in 1890; she was the daughter of James Clark, coal merchant. In 1892 Joe married again to another Mary Ann, was born in Darlington, a widow with a daughter, they lived in Pontefract. Joe died in Pontefract in 1946 at the age of 81.

The medal card and medal rolls show Joe Beilby in the 8th Battalion, York & Lancaster Regiment which was raised in Pontefract. He embarked for France on 27 Aug 1915, later transferring in 1917 to the Labour Corps and on demobilisation on 23 Jan 1919, became a Class 'Z' Reservist.
