Born on 26 Oct 1895 Gerald Duncan Butters was the son of Uriah and Annie Butters. Uriah had a drapers shop in Beverley. Gerald attended the Beverley Wesleyan School, he left aged 14 on 23 Dec 1909 and worked in his father's shop.

Gerald and his brother Uriah enlisted in the 10th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment on 3 Sep 1914. They both served with the Regiment in Egypt and were both awarded the 1914-1915 Star. Gerald was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Uriah was promoted to Sergeant, and subsequently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and transferred to the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Gerald was discharged on 15 Mar 1918 and awarded the Silver War Badge which suggests that he had been wounded and was no longer fit for active service. He also received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Gerald returned to working in his father's shop, becoming a Master Draper. He was a member of the Beverley and East Riding Golf Club in the years between the wars and frequently represented the Club in local tournaments. He married Flora Taylor in 1923, they had two daughters, Hilary born 1925 and Shirley born 1927. Gerald and Flora retired to Australia, their names appear on the Electoral Register for Morwell, Victoria in 1967. Gerald died in 1978, Flora in 1971.
