Norman Bayliss was born in 1896, the son of Reverend Archibald Bayliss, a Wesleyan Minister, and Mary James (nee Shrimpton). The family moved about the country as Reverend Bayliss was appointed to different chapels, his last appointment was in Withernsea where Norman's parents remained. Norman and his brother Reginald were both boarders at Kingswood School, Bath.
Norman served in the Army, he initially served as a Private in the Lincolnshire Regiment and was posted to France in Jul 1915. He was transferred to the Royal Engineers and was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Norman was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 31 Oct 1917 and posted to the Leicestershire Regiment. It was reported in the Beverley Guardian on 30 Mar 1918 that he had been seriously wounded. Second Lieutenant Bayliss was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
His brother Reginald Bayliss also served, as a Second Lieutenant with the Manchester Regiment, he was killed inaction on 18 Nov 1916, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
Norman returned to Beverley living at 12 St Giles Croft, he joined the Merchant Navy as a Wireless Operator but by 1939 had retired and was living with his widowed father in Withernsea. Norman died in 1961 and is buried with his parents in Withernsea Cemetery.
