William Joseph Bovingdon was born in Poplar, London the 1 Mar 1893 the son of William and Hannah Bovingdon (nee Robinson). William senior was in the Army based in London and his mother was born 1868 in Beverley. In1901 William and his mother were living with his grandmother Emma Robinson, at 85 Keldgate, Beverley. By 1911, William at 18 was a boarder at 21 Pearson Street, Hull, working as a labourer.
William enlisted with the Prince of Wales Own Regiment as a Private, regimental number 9537 in 1911. At the outbreak of war he was sent to France and during the Battle of the Aisne was taken prisoner on 20 Sep 1914. He spent the rest of the war in a prison of war camp. He was repatriated to 1 Cardigan Gardens, Brunswick Avenue, Hull on 6 Mar 1919. He was awarded the 15 star, the Victory and the British medals.
William married Elizabeth O’Toole in Jul 1921 in Hull, they had two children. William and Elizabeth lived at 3 Flamborough Terrace, Middleton Street, Spring Bank, Hull in 1939. Their eldest son William Joseph, emigrated on 6 Apr 1954 to Quebec, Canada on the 'Scythia' from Southampton. He died on 5 Oct 1981 in Kitimac, British Columbia.
