William was born in Beverley the 3 Apr 1898 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 19 Aug 1898, the son of Robert Scruton and Martha Alberta. Robert worked as a goods’ porter at Beverley station for the NER, but later became a tanner’s labourer. The family lived at 56 Minstermoorgate. William became a joiner.
William joined the Territorial Army at the West Hull Recruiting Office on 17 Nov 1914. He became a private in the 3rd Reserve Northumbrian Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps, later transferring to the 2nd /2nd Northumbrian Field Ambulance. He joined the BEF in France on 28 May 1915. He served in France until 4 May 1917 when he was given extended leave and medical treatment having been gassed on 23 Apr in the Battle of Arras. William returned to service on 8 Aug 1917 and served in France until Jan 1919. He was awarded a Silver Badge and left the army on 24 Feb 1919, he also received the War and Victory Medals and the 1914-15 Star.
William returned to Beverley working as a joiner and he was a trade union member. On Boxing Day 1919 he married Amy Gilson at Beverley Minster, she worked as a domestic servant at Westbourne Avenue, Hull before the war. They had two children, Dorothy born 1924 and Amy born 1932. In 1939 the family were living at 56 Beaver Road, Beverley. Amy died in 1943 and William in Jan 1976, aged 77, he was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 27 Jan 1976. ` Includes photograph, information taken from census, military records, Commonwealth War Graves, newspapers |
