James Shingles was born in Beverley the 16 Feb1893 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 10 Mar 1896. James was one of twelve children born to James and Jane Shingles (nee Hebden ). The family lived Molescroft before moving to West Terrace, Potter Hill/Flemingate, Beverley. In 1911 James was a cattleman at Beck End Farm, Arram.

James enlisted on 19 Oct 1914, he served as a private and then Lance Corporal with the 5th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, the Green Howards. The 5th were part of 150th Brigade and 50th (Northumbrian) Division and were involved in actions on the Somme in the second half of 1916 at Flers-Courcelette, Morval and Transloy Ridges. At some point James received serious wounds but no reports were carried in the local paper. He was considered unfit for further service and awarded a Silver Badge and discharged from the Army on 20 Apr 1917. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1914-15 Star.

James was living at 8 Norton Street, Beverley in 1939 and was employed as a gardener. He didn't marry and died on 30 Dec 1972 at the East Riding General Hospital, Driffield aged 79. He was buried at Queensgate Cemetery, beverley on 4 Jan 1973.
