Arthur Sample was born in Little Cressingham, Norfolk in 1890, one of fourteen children of Henry Sample and Elizabeth Doyle. Arthur was employed as a farm labourer and in 1911 still lived in Little Cressingham. Henry, Elizabeth and the family later moved to Beverley.

Arthur was a Private in the Norfolk Regiment and embarked for France in Dec 1915. He was demobilised in May 1919 and was a Class Z reservist. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.

In 1921 he married Edna Gertrude Hargreaves, daughter of James Arthur Hargreaves, a coal merchant from Hull. Arthur and Edna had seven children, Vera, Ena, Frederick, Richard, Eric, Joyce and Allan. In 1934 Arthur married again to Ida Winifred Goulthorpe from Barton on Humber, Ida died in 1936 at the age of 35.

Arthur married for a third time at the age of 47 in 1937 to Martha Gregory, also 47, and the 1939 Register shows Arthur, living with Martha and at least one of his children, Eric, in Keldgate, Beverley. Arthur's occupation was listed as a cake mill grinder. At least two of his other children, Joyce and Richard, were living in Norwood, Beverley, with his sister, Rosanna, and her husband John Milner Noddle.

Arthur died in 1965 aged 75, Martha died aged 79 in 1971.
