Edward Smith was born in Tickton in 1893, the son of William and Harriet Smith (nee Worledge), William was a blacksmith. The family lived in Beverley. In 1911 Harriet was living with her three sons and four daughters in Lairgate, Beverley. Edward was working as a horseman.

Edward joined the 1st Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1916 as a private and rose to the rank of Lance Corporal. He was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on 11 Dec 1916, aged 23. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Thiepval memorial. He awarded the British and Victory medals.

Edward is remembered on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster, on Beverley War Memorial at Hengate, Beverley and on the Independent Order of Oddfellows roll of honour.
