Fred Smith was born in Beverley the 28 Apr 1885 and was baptised at Beverley Minster the 20 Mar 1886, he was the son of John and Anne Smith. The family lived in St Andrew Street, later moving to 29 Lurk Lane. By 1901 Fred was apprenticed to a stonemason and later became a fully fledged stonemason. He was a member of the Oddfellows Friendly Society. Fred was unmarried.

Fred served as a private in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, he probably enlisted in 1915 and arrived in France in 1916. Fred was killed in action on the Somme on 21 Jul 1916, his body was not recovered. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme. At the time of his death Fred was attached to the 1st/4th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, involved in an action in the vicinity of Wytschaete sector.

Fred is commemorated on the street shriene for St Andrew Street (Lurk Lane section), the Hengate Memorial, Beverley and on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster.
