Richard William Sissons was born in 1896, the son of Samuel and Jane Sissons of Trinity Lane, Beverley. Samuel was a groom from Brandesburton and Jane (nee Witty) was from Beverley.

Richard enlisted as Private 2761 in the 5th Reserve Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment on 9 Nov 1914. By Sep 1916 he had been transferred to the 4th Yorks and Lancs. In the Nov 1916 he was wounded by both gunshot and shell, suffering shell shock and was evacuated back to England to be treated in Bethnal Green Hospital. In Jan 1917 he was transferred to the 10th Yorks and Lancs and returned to the front, earning promotion to Lance Corporal in the May 1917.

Lance Corporal Richard William Sissons was killed in action on 30 Sep 1917 and a copy of the letter that his mother received from Guyton Thomas, the Adjutant of the Yorks and Lancs was printed in the Beverley Guardian. Richard was buried in the Hoodge Crater Cemetery, Ypres and is remembered on the Beverley War Memorial and Beverley Minster Roll of Honour. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
