George Jefferson Scott was born in 1874 in Market Weighton, the son of George Scott and Victoria Jefferson, who married on 15 Jun 1871 in Goodmanham. His sister Ida Mary Scott was born in 1873.
The 1891, 1901, and 1911 England Census records show that George was a bank clerk, living in Market Place, Market Weighton. From 1900-1905 he was manager at Barclays Bank, Pocklington, attached to the Bank of Beverley. George married Jenny Bell on 6 Nov 1911 at All Saints Church, Market Weighton and they had two children, Victoria born 1912 and George J born 1915.
George was a member of the Second East Yorkshire Volunteers before the war and achieved the rank of Captain in 1912. At the beginning of the war George joined the 5th Battalion of the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on Christmas Day 1915 in West Flanders, Belgium and is buried at the Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Arondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal and the 1914-15 Star
The children were still young when his wife Jenny died in March 1918. Her effects were given in probate to her father Robert Bell, hotel keeper of the Londesborough Hotel, Market Weighton.
