James Rowe was born in Hull the 4 Dec 1892, the son of Henry Rowe and Mary Ann (nee Trafford). Henry was from Stainby, Staffordshire whilst Mary was from Louth, Lincolnshire. They married in Hull in 1888. Henry was a butcher and the family lived on Grove Terrace, then Holland Street, Hull. James’ family moved to Beverley, his sister Gladys was born there in 1907. They lived at 98 Minstermoorgate, then at 127 Keldgate. James was recorded in the 1911 census as a butcher’s assistant at James Nelson and Sons, 10 Toll Gavel. From 1908 to 1911 James was a member of the Beverley Church Lads’ Brigade. Before the war his widowed mother moved the family back to Hull.

James enlisted in the regular army on 1 Apr 1914, joining the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment as a private. They had been in India before the war but on returning to the UK in Dec 1914 they were sent to the Western Front. James arrived in France the 8 May 1915 taking part in the 2nd Battle of Ypres and the action at Loos. James was discharged from the Army on 10 June 1916 as being unfit for further duty. He was awarded a Silver Badge and the 1914-15 Star and the War and Victory Medals.

In the 1920s and early 1930s James lived with his mother and sisters at Durham Villas, Middleburg Street, Hull. He was employed as a docker. In 1939 he married Ena Richardson at Hull Register Office. They lived in Severn Street, Hull. James died in 1973 aged 80.
