Jim Revell was born in Beverley the 27 Mar 1882, one of eleven children of tanner’s labourer, George Revell and his wife Mary Ann. Jim was brought up in Sloe Lane and later Highgate, Beverley became a tanner’s labourer. On 27 Jul 1907 Jim married Mary Elizabeth Grantham at Beverley Minster, their first child, George was born the 3 Aug 1910. They lived in Eastgate and then at 51 Lurk Lane, Beverley. The family moved to Hull where their third child, Annie, was born the 20 Sep 1913. They lived at 3 Annie Terrace, South Parade. Jim was a rulleyman or carter.
Jim attested in Hull on 18 Sep 1914 and joined the Royal Engineers, 82nd Field Company and later transferring to the 89th Field Company. He served as a driver, he arrived in France on 3 Oct 1915. He was wounded twice, in Jun 1916 and Sep 1917 and had two spells in hospital. He left the army in Feb 1919. Jim was awarded the War and Victory medals as well as the 1914-15 Star.
Jim then worked as a railway carter and lived near Albert Dock at 67 English Street, Hull. He died in 1952 aged 70. Mary Elizabeth died in 1951. Includes information taken from census, military records, Commonwealth War Graves, newspapers |
