Fred was born in Hull on 28 Oct 1893 and baptised at St Stephen’s Church on 3 Dec 1893, the son of William and Mary Richardson, both born in Hull in 1874. The family was living at 17 William’s Terrace, Albert Street, Hull. The family lived in poverty, at the time of the 1901 census they were living in Bramley Street, Hull but Fred was a pauper at the Workhouse, receiving the support of the Poor Law authorities. On 10 Apr 1914 he married Gertrude Thompson at St Mary’s Church, Beverley, their first child, John, was born in 1914.
Fred served with the Royal Garrison Artillery in East Africa, as a driver. He left Devonport on 8 Feb 1916 and arrived in Mombasa on 14 Mar 1916. The Battery returned to the UK in Jan 1918 and was redesignated the 545th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. They were sent to France and took part in many actions in the 100 Days Offensive that brought about the end of the war. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
The family moved to Hull and in 1939 were living at 47 Hessle Road, Fred was working a gravedigger. Gertrude died in 1964 and Fred died in Hull in 1968 aged 74.
