George Roe was probably one of the oldest men in Beverley to serve in the First World War. He was born the 6 Sep 1868 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 8 Nov 1868, the son of Matthew and Sarah Jane Roe. George was brought up initially in Highgate and then in Brigham’s Yard, off Wednesday Market, he became a painter.
George joined the Territorial Army on 7 Apr 1908, serving as a private in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, nicknamed the “Beverley Terriers”. George signed up for a further four years service on 24 Mar 1911, he served in the war, arriving in France on 17 Apr 1915 and took part in the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium, in the action at St Julien. On 26 Jun 1915, he was discharged from the TA and returned home. He joined the RAF on 2 Jul 1918 and served with them in an unknown capacity until Apr 1919. George was awarded the War and Victory medals as well as the 1914-15 Star.
On his return to Beverley George married Lilian Maud Dennis, born in 1873 the daughter of a wheelwright. They lived at 50 St Andrew Street. George died in 1934, aged 65, and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 2 Feb 1934. Lilian died in 1939 and was buried on 11 Nov 1939.
