Herbert William Russell was born the 5 Mar 1890, the son of William and Agnes Russell. William was born in Beverley but the family lived in Hull. Herbert married a Beverley girl, Annie Bowser in 1914 and they lived in Tiger Lane, Beverley. Herbert was a porter on the North Eastern Railway.

Herbert enlisted with the Yorks and Lancs Regiment in 1915 and quickly rose through the ranks to the position of Sergeant, he was wounded in action, probably in the area around Polygon Wood in Nov 1917. The Beverley Guardian reported him wounded in the 17 Nov edition of the newspaper. He was awarded the Silver War Badge the Victory Medal and the British War Medal and was discharged from service in Mar 1918.

After the war Herbert and Annie continued to live on Tiger Lane, their daughter Jean was baptised in St Mary’s Church in Nov 1925. In 1939 he was listed as a road sweeper.

Herbert died in 1958 and he was buried at New Walk Cemetery, Beverley on 3 Sep 1958. His wife was buried with him in 1975.
