Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Arthur was born in Beverley the 19 Feb 1893 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 26 Mar 1893, the son of John Ellerker Ross, a joiner and Norah (nee Southwick). When he left school at 14 Arthur followed in his fathers footsteps. Arthur was one of five children, the family home was in Wilbert Lane, Beverley.
Arthur served in the army between 1916 and early 1919, he probably joined up in early 1916 (possibly after his marriage) and became a private in the 8th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. Arthur was wounded twice but information exists only on the first wounding.
Whilst on the frontline of the Somme between the 4th and the 7th Jan 1917, his Battalion suffered heavy German shelling and Arthur, according to the Beverley Guardian of 20 Jan 1917, was seriously wounded on the 7th, sufficiently so to be repatriated to hospital in Leicester. He resumed his service and the 8th Battalion was involved at Arras, Cambrai and in Belgium. The 8th Battalion was disbanded on 17 Jan 1918 due to heavy losses and Arthur was transferred to the 10th Battalion of the East Yorkshires. Arthur was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
Arthur married in Edith Ramsey in 1916, they had two children, Kathleen born 1920 and Fred born 1924. The family home was 20 Trinity Lane. Arthur resumed his trade as a joiner. He died in early 1967.
