Arthur Ellerker Ross, known as Jack Ross, was born in Beverley in 1895, the eldest of six children born to Harry Ellerker Ross and his wife, Eva. He was educated at St Mary's Boys' School, Beverley and later at the Hull Technical College. He left school in Mar 1911 and commenced work with East Riding county Council at County Hall in the County Surveyors' Department. He was the Colour Sergeant in the Beverley Company of the Church Lads' Brigade and, along with eleven other "lads" and the Company's commanding officer, joined the 5th Yorks (Beverley Territorials) a fortnight after war was declared.

Arthur went out to France in Apr 1915, was wounded at Ypres on 2 Mar 1916 and returned to England to be treated in University College Hospital, London. He was afterwards given a commission as Sub-Lieutenant, in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Land Forces) and fought in Passchendaele where he had to take charge of his company when all the officers except himself were casualties. He was promoted Lieutenant, he served three winters at the front, and went out again on 18 Sep 1918 after six months in England.

In Oct 1918, the Admiralty reported that , "Lieut Arthur Ellerker (Jack) Ross, 'Anson' Batt. Royal Naval Division land forces was killed in action on October 8th".

He was buried and is commemorated at Rumilly-en-Cambresis Communal Cemetery Extension, and his name appears on the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate. His name also appears on the Roll of Honour of the Beverley Company of the Church Lads' Brigade. The names of all Brigade members who died in battle are read out in a special ceremony which is held in the Beverley CLB Brigade Headquarters each year on Armistice Sunday prior to the Brigade taking part in a Church Parade.
