Frank was born in 1889 the eldest of at least 10 children born to John William Reed and his wife Mary Ellen Pool of Beverley. John was a printing compositor for Messrs Green and Son printers for 48 years until his death in 1929. In 1891 Frank and his parents were living with his maternal grandparents Robinson and Mary Pool in Vicar Lane, Beverley. In 1911 the family were living in Norwood Far Grove, Beverley and Frank was a labourer in a whiting works.

Frank joined the 1/5th Yorkshire Regiment on 1 Nov 1915 as Private 2921, and was later transferred to the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment as Private 220452. He was awarded the Victory, British and 15 Star. He died on 20 Jul 1918 at Glageon, France and was buried in the Community Cemetery which was used for the burial of German soldiers and Allied prisoners from Sep 1914 to Aug 1918.
