Private John William Robinson, aged 22 was killed in action in France on 23 Apr 1917 and is buried in the Wancourt British Cemetery near Arras. He served in the 4th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, part of the 150th Infantry Brigade, 50th (Northern) Division and was in action in the Battle of Arras which began on 9 Apr 1917. He was posthumously awarded the War and Victory Medals.
John was born in Beverley on the 13 Jul 1894 the son of William and Annie Eliza Robinson, he was baptised at St Mary's Church, Beverley. William ran an umbrella making and repairing business from their home, 9 Walkergate, Beverley, they later moved to 108 Lairgate. John had two siblings Mary Emma born 1878 and Thomas Henry Brooks born 1884. Before enlisting John worked as a tanners labourer.
John is remembered today on the Hengate War Memorial and on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster.
