Edward Riby was born the 5 Jul 1882 in beverley the son of George Watson Riby and Mary Jane (nee Smith). He attended Walkergate Wesleyan Day School. Edward married Sarah Ann Stevenson at Frodingham Church, Scunthorpe in 1909, they had two children, William Edward born 20 Apr 1910 and Kathleen born 9 Oct 1913 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. At the time of the 1911 census he was working as a house painter.
Edward enlisted in the 6th Battalion, Yorkshire Light Infantry on 16 Jan 1915 and went to France on 4 May. He was killed in action at Hooge, Flanders on 29 Jul 1915.
Sergeant T H Glanes wrote to his wife
'I have great sorrow in informing you of your husband's accident. We were on our way to the trenches and had almost landed there when it happened. I can safely say he was one of the most decent chaps in my platoon and always did his duty, and he did his duty to the last...'
He is remembered with honour on the Menin Gate, Ypres.
