Charles Edward Quaid was born in Keldgate, Beverley in 1894, the son of Adeline Hill and Walton Edward David Quaid. Walton was from an Army family, he was born in Poonah, India, and in 1881, aged 15, lived at the Victoria Barracks, Beverley, where Charles Edward's grandfather, James, was Barracks Sergeant. Charles Edward's great-grandfather, David, who originated from Ireland, was also a military man, who fought in the Crimea.

In the 1911 Census Charles aged 16 was living at 98 Keldgate, and was employed as a grocer's errand boy.

Charles served in the East Yorkshire Regiment, his medal card shows he embarked for France on 8 Sep 1914 with the 1st Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and took part in the first battle of Aisne. Charles aged 20 years, was "Presumed dead - on or since 20 Sep 1914". The Beverley Guardian dated 31 Oct 1914, reported :

"Mr. W. Quaid of 98 Keldgate, Beverley, has been notified by the War Office that his son, Pte. C.E. Quaid, 1st Battalion East Yorks Regiment is "missing" in France since 20 Sep"

He is remembered on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial which commemorates 3,740 officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force who fell at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne between the end of Aug and early Oct 1914 and who have no known graves. He is also remembered on the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate, along with his younger brother, James and his uncle Charles who also died.
