George was born the 21 Jul 1896 the son of Charles Peck, born in Castleford, a waterman on barges, and Sarah Ann Peck, born in Knottingley. The 1891 census shows the parents to be living in Beckside, Beverley. In 1901 George, aged 4 was living in Beverley with his sister Sarah Elizabeth who was aged 21 and a domestic housekeeper. His parents were on the barge, with an older brother also working as a keelman. The 1911 census shows George had eleven siblings but only ten of the twelve were still living.
George served as a Corporal in the Church Lads Brigade in Beverley.
He enlisted with the 5th Yorkshire Battalion (Alexandra) Princess of Wales Own (Yorkshire) Regiment, The Green Howards in Aug 1914. He served in France and was promoted to Sergeant, he was awarded the Victory Medal, British Medal, and 15 Star with a qualifying date of 18 Apr 1915.
George married Lydia Ethel Jude in 1926 in Beverley, they had a son Michael born 1927. George died in 1976.
