John Stirton Pert, regimental number 3254, 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action on 29 Jul 1916 at the beginning of the Somme offensive.
John was born in Forfar, Scotland in 1895 the youngest son of John and Mary Pert, his father was a boiler maker and in 1901 the family was living on Brazil Street, Hull. John followed his father into the ship building trade and by 1911 he was an apprentice plater living with his eldest sister Alexandrina Hamlet and family in Vicar Lane, Beverley.
John joined the 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment who were engaged in the first Battles of the Somme in Jul 1916. He died on 29 Jul 1916 and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at Ypres, Belgium.
His death was recorded in the Beverley Guardian in Aug 1916 where his address was given as Dyer Lane, Beverley. He is remembered on the St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour, the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster and on the Beverley War Memorial, Hengate
