Leonard was born the 27 Feb 1896 in Beverley, the son of Tyler and Ada Padget. At the age of 15 he was a draper’s errand boy, and before enlisting he was in the employ of Mrs William Hodgson of Westwood Hall, Beverley.

Leonard served as a Private in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and the Medal Rolls show that he earned the British War and Victory medals. The 5th Yorkshire Battalion was originally known as the Scarborough or Beverley “Terriers”, comprising as it did mainly of men from the southern half of the county. It became part of the British Expeditionary Force, arriving in France in Apr 1915, and took part in a number of battles in the conflict around Ypres. Leonard was killed in action, aged 20, during an offensive which began on 15 Sep 1916, he has no known grave. He is “Remembered with Honour” on the Thiepval Memorial. Leonard’s name also appears on the Roll of Honour of the Beverley Church Lads’ Brigade. The names of all Brigade members who died in battle are read out in a special ceremony which is held in the Beverley Brigade Headquarters each year on Armistice Sunday prior to the Brigade taking part in a church parade.
