Percy O’Connell was born in 1894 in Flemingate, Beverley, the son of William and Mary O'Connell, one of seven children. His father William was a tanner. According to the 1911 census Percy was working in the shipyard as a labourer. He lived with his parents and two of his brothers in Flemingate.
Percy joined the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (the Green Howards) in 1915. He served in France in 1915 and was discharged on 10 Mar 1917. He was awarded all three of the war medals, the 15 Star, the British and Victory medals.
On 24 Dec 1917 Percy married Margaret Winifred Ford at Beverley Minster. He was 23 and was a ship’ riveter in the ship yard. They had two children, Gladys born 1918 and Doris born 1920.
On 15 Dec 1920 Percy died. He was 26 years old. He was buried at St Martin’s Cemetery, Beverley with full military honours.
