Harold O’Connell was born the 2 Oct 1881 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, the son of William and Mary O’Connell and was one of 7 children. His father was a tanner’s labourer and the family lived in Flemingate, Beverley. In 1900 Harold enlisted with the Lincoln Regiment and served for 9 years. In 1909 he was transferred to the Army reserve and served another 3 years. On 24 Oct 1910 Harold married Alice Maud Plougher at Beverley Minster.
Harold re-enlisted with the Yorkshire Regiment on 18 Apr 1915. He fought in France and earned the 15 Star medal. On 27 May 1918 he was taken prisoner of war and was released in Dec 1918. He left the army in 1926. He was awarded the British and Victory medals.
In 1939 Harold and Alice were living in Well Lane, Beverley. He was a builder’s labourer. Alice died in 1952 in Beverley and Harold died in 1960. They were both buried at Queensgate Cemetery.
