Walter Oxtoby was born the 24 Nov 1880 in Beverley, one of eleven children born to George and Mary Ann Oxtoby (nee Newton). George was a fireman working in the tannery, the family lived at Flemingate, Beverley. Walter married Charlotte Ellen Botham on 30 Jan 1905 at Beverley Minster, he was a labourer. They had two children, Doris born 1906 and Walter born 1910, the family lived in Keldgate. In 1911 he is recorded as a market gardener.

Walter enlisted with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment in 1914. He was transferred to the York and Lancs. Regiment in 1915 and served in France until 1917 when he was wounded in the arm. He was the transferred to the Royal Defence Corps and was discharged from the army in 1919. Walter was awarded the British and Victory medal, he was also granted the Silver War badge in 1920.

Walter and his family continued to live in Beverley, he was recorded as a shop keeper in 1922, living at Keldgate. Walter died on 25 Feb 1931 aged 50 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley. Charlotte married Joseph Jeffrey in 1932. She died in 1941 and is buried with Walter.
