Edgar Oldfield was born on 16 Sep 1898 to George and Mary Elizabeth Oldfield, the eighth of eleven children, five of whom, along with their father, went to war. On 12 Jun 1914 Edgar enlisted as Private 27619 in the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry and at some point was transferred to the Cheshire Regiment as Private 5726, serving in Salonika. Edgar was discharged from the army on 2 Aug 1918 with a silver badge and was awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and the Territorial Force War Medal and is remembered on the Roll of Honour.

In Nov 1918 Edgar joined the Beverley Borough Police as a constable. Edgar married Mary Annie Bainbridge of Woodmansey in Dec 1918 and in Sep 1919 they had their first child, George William whilst living at Wood Lane. In Jul 1920 he was awarded his first certificate in Ambulance Life Saving, but by late 1921 Edgar’s police career was to be cut short when he was charged with neglect of duty.

In 1939 Edgar is resident in Whickham, Durham. He is described as a linesman.
